The Effects of Aging on Your Eyelids

Aging can affect your appearance in a number of ways, but one of the most obvious is the eyelids. When your eyes appear tired due to sagging or wrinkles, it can add years to your appearance. Correcting these problems is a fairly simple procedure with little downtime that can greatly improve your overall appearance. Here are the three primary ways that aging affects your eyelids.

Sagging

Over time, the body stops producing as much collagen and elastin in the skin. This causes your skin to lose elasticity and begin to sag. Sagging around the eyelids can result in the corners of your eyes drooping or excess skin drooping from the tops of the eyelids. This sagging can sometimes become so severe that it affects your vision.

Puffiness

There are cushions of fat that support the eye. And if you have excess skin on your eyelids, this fat could move to fill in the spaces. If that happens, it could result in puffiness above the eye in the upper lid, or it could result in bags forming under the eyes. Even if you treat under-eye baggage with creams to lighten the area, the puffiness will not go away without treatment.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the small fine wrinkles that occur at the corners of the eyelids. These lines generally come from smiling and laughing as you crinkle your eyes. You can also get these wrinkles if you spend a lot of time outdoors squinting in bright sunlight or if you have vision problems that require you to squint to focus on reading material.
