Everything You Need to Know About Blepharoplasty

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a type of eyelid surgery where excess skin, fat, and other tissues are removed from the eyelids, improving disrupted vision and restoring a youthful appearance. People usually get blepharoplasty as a cosmetic procedure for age-related changes to their eyes. However, blepharoplasty can be a reconstructive procedure if the sagging skin and tissues are affecting the person’s vision.

What Should I Expect During My Blepharoplasty Procedure?

Most blepharoplasty procedures can be done in an outpatient facility under local anesthesia. Sedation can also be provided if desired. During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions in the affected eyelids to remove the offending tissues. These incisions are so small that they are almost always invisible after recovery.

Many people choose to have other cosmetic procedures done at the same time as their blepharoplasty, including brow lifts, facelifts, and skin resurfacing.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is appropriate for both men and women, young and old. There are no strict requirements for a person to qualify for blepharoplasty. As long as they are in relatively good health and have realistic expectations for the surgery, they are a candidate for the procedure.

What About Blepharoplasty Recovery?

Most patients experience bruising and swelling for 1-2 weeks after their blepharoplasty. Many are able to return to work after just one week, but avoiding any type of strenuous exercise or activity for several weeks is required for optimal results. Makeup should also be avoided as it is irritating to the incisions and can introduce harmful bacteria.

Blepharoplasty Results

Blepharoplasty results are different for everyone, so there’s no way to say exactly how things will turn out, but assuming they had realistic expectations, most patients are elated with their outcome. Results typically last for 10-15 years without the need for further surgery, although it is important to note that blepharoplasty does not prevent future aging. Patients sometimes combine the procedure with Botox® injections to maximize results.
